Australian Teachers

Australian teachers

At Hourglass, we’re used to dealing with complex visa requirements. As a result of our long connection with international teachers, we’ve lost count of just how many education professionals and schools we’ve helped through this process.

We regularly interview teachers in their home countries and follow up with a tailored support programme to take them through immigration, relocation and beyond. From time to time, we get an unusual one, and that’s when it gets interesting.

One of our consultants picked up a call from a teacher who was currently teaching in the UK from Australia, who introduced himself as a “non-qualified teacher with a big education but with less experience than most”. We know that some heads really value teachers with good subject knowledge and in certain circumstances they can be employed as unqualified instructors in English schools. However, this teacher went on to explain that his right to work in the UK was about to expire, which meant that the clock was most definitely ticking!

Exciting new job with a great starting salary

As recruitment specialists, we know that square pegs don’t fit into round holes. We understand that sometimes circumstances get in the way. Of course our priority is to find the best teachers for our client schools and great opportunities for the teachers who register with us. If that means we sometimes have to think outside the box, that’s fine by us!

Our Australian teacher was thrilled with the outcome: “I now have an exciting new job, a great starting salary and I can remain in the UK with my family. Without sounding dramatic, everyone else thought it was hopeless considering the odds but the Hourglass team made it happen”.

Years of dealing with teachers across the world has taught us that regardless of their nationality, each teacher has personal ambitions and circumstances that make them unique. More importantly, their diverse career histories and wide-ranging experience often mean they have a great deal to offer in English schools.

Determined to help

Our Australian teacher had already tried “countless agencies around the UK but no one could help”. He was “tired of rhetoric and promises from agents who not only couldn’t deliver but didn’t bother to try to understand my specific situation”.

“I was taken aback by their heartfelt service – and in a world where tech dominates, it was refreshing to feel a sense of community in the Hourglass team”.

Fortunately, Hourglass has a dedicated international team. They were determined to help and quickly took up the challenge. The team were in touch “literally every single day … encouraging, providing support and going out of their way” to find the teacher’s perfect job. He said: “I was taken aback by their heartfelt service – and in a world where tech dominates, it was refreshing to feel a sense of community in the Hourglass team”.
